no drama obama because in debates, normally sort of cool. i don't think he can afford to overplay that hand tonight. for mitt romney, it's a good opportunity to attack, but not be seen as being some sort of attack dog. put the president on the defensive. >> let me bring in jason chaffitz from utah. the question about the 47%. we saw in our "wall street journal" poll. talk about things that make people feel one way or another about the candidate. this has had a very negative effect. this statement mitt romney made on the voting public, so how does he answer that question about the 47%? because to say that i want to be the president for the 100% clearly has not resognated. >> well, look, mitt romney was the very first person to say he wasn't very eloquent in the way he said that, but i think when he can look the president in the eye, the american people in the eye and say he's taking on this role and trying to become the president of the united states because he wants us all to succeed, people are going to have to judge for themselves. that's

can anybody remember anything from the debate four years ago between mccain and obama? i certainly can't. >> bret: very little. >> very little. >> uneventful debate. they happen. >> that is the first time we saw senator obama then at the time hold his own with the older statesman, more experienced person. >> bret: by the way, he started in the first debate calling him john. he didn't call him senator. he called him john. i'd be interesting to see does he call mitt romney "mitt" or "governor"? >> i assume he'll call him governor and one thing we have to find out. we don't know. for practicing they do, once the dynamic is up there it's easy to get under president obama's skin i think. from some of his channelers that said that before. people who debated him. we'll see. well practiced to not be smug. on the same side, governor romney, he can't sort of call for help as he did in the debate in the primary. >> what i would suggest to the president is don't call him "mittens." >> bret: that would be bad. jonah, final word. >> it's interesting that obama become has to practice

look, barack obama hasn't debated in four years. mitt romney has had a lot of debates in that time, but i do think it's worth noting, andrea, that all of mitt romney's debates have been against multiple people. there was never a time where he had a one on one debate against rick santorum or newt gingrich or rick perry. always debating four or five people who were really sort of aiming at him. he was the frontrunner throughout. barack obama had four debates against hillary clinton, one on one in the 2008 democratic primary, then three debates against john mccain. it's a different dynamic than to be the frontrunner where four or five people are aiming at you throughout a debate. >> here we are on the eve practically of the first debate and it's supposed to be an economic, domestic policy. >> right. >> and now foreign policy has reared its head. we have first of all mitt romney and "the wall street journal" an op-ed, saying that these developments are not as president obama says, mere bumps in the road. they are major issues that put o
